Commercial Airlines
Feel free to surf the web for prices, but be aware that we get the lowest group fares for First Air into Fort Simpson, Yellowknife, Inuvik, Kugluktuk, and Iqualuit from Edmonton. See below for the contact info for our agent who will connect you with these lowest fares. For Whitehorse, check out http://www.flyairnorth.com.

If you have any questions about rates at any time, please call us first and we can ensure you are on the right track.

You are welcome to make flight reservations through your own agent or if you wish you may contact our agent. He is well versed in northern travel arrangements and is happy to assist.  He can also access group rates on First Air that are not available on the web. Feel free to ask us at our office if there are any recent sales that we know of.

Book your flights so that you arrive on the first date listed for your trip and depart on the last date listed. You may wish to allow a layover day before or following your trip. This allows for breathing space and a more favorable transition back to “civilization”. Our itineraries do not cover hotel costs.

Northern conditions pose tremendous challenges to the transportation industry. For this reason you may be required to exercise patience during the northern leg of your journey. If you are delayed for any reason, don’t worry. If necessary, call our office number at the first opportunity and leave a message regarding the nature of your situation.

Your guides will be coordinating plans at your final destination and will make arrangements to ensure that when you do arrive, your adventure continues smoothly.

The good news is that our guests consistently praise the friendly service of northern carriers that other airlines have all but lost. Your northern flight will be one of your many highlights – and in a good way!

Your guides will be coordinating plans at your final destination and will make arrangements to ensure that when you do arrive, your adventure continues smoothly.

Airline Routing

The “hubs” for most northern flights are Edmonton and Vancouver (Calgary can also work). Below are the best options you will have:

Fort Simpson (Nahanni) – Edmonton > Yellowknife > Fort Simpson

  1. We recommend you book the group rate on First Air through Jim at Master Travel. You won’t get a better price.
  2. Alternatively, you can take Air Canada Jazz, or Canadian North to Yellowknife, Then First Air or Air Tindi to Fort Simpson. Beware that the Air Canada regional jet has low cargo capacity which can mean delayed baggage.
  3. If you are coming from Whitehorse, First Air flies Monday, Wednesday and Friday to Fort Simpson and then on to Yellowknife (it originates in Yellowknife).

Whitehorse (Tatshenshini, Alsek, Snake, Wind, Stikine, Yukon) Edmonton / Calgary or Vancouver > Whitehorse

  1. The best option from Edmonton / Calgary or Vancouver is Air North. They provide great service and good value.
  2. Air Canada. Beware that the Air Canada regional jet has low cargo capacity which can mean delayed baggage.

From Germany: Condor has a  flight from Frankfurt twice a week.

Yellowknife (Burnside, Coppermine) Edmonton > Yellowknife

  1. We recommend you book the group rate on First Air through Jim at Master Travel. You won’t get a better price.
  2. Alternatively, you can take Air Canada Jazz, or Canadian North. NEW: Westjet now flies to Yellowknife!
  3. If you are coming from Whitehorse, First Air flies Monday, Wednesday and Friday to Fort Simpson and then on to Yellowknife.

Coppermine trip requires that you book a return from Kugluktuk to Yellowknife on First Air.

Inuvik (Firth, Horton)

  1. From Calgary or Edmonton through Yellowknife on First Air or Canadian North
  2. From Calgary or Edmonton through Whitehorse on Air North (overnight required), and then on to Inuvik on Air North.

Norman Wells (Mountain) Edmonton or Calgary > Yellowknife > Norman Wells
First Air and Canadian North both serve Norman Wells.

"Now I see the secret of making the best persons, it is to grow in the open air, and eat and sleep with the earth."

-Walt Whitman

Private aircraft

Whitehorse, Yellowknife, Inuvik, Dease Lake and Fort Simpson have federal airports with paved runways. All fuels are generally available.

Early arrival

If you plan to arrive early and are wondering about activities in the area, feel free to enquire of our office by phone or Email. We can usually get you pointed in the right direction. Your guides are not available until meeting time. Most of their work is of a nature that is best handled by them alone. Similarly, following the trip your guides may have a short turn around before the next trip so they will have to leave you following the last gathering. Your indulgence in this will be appreciated by the staff.

From the UK

Getting to the northern territories has become much easier in the last year. Up until 2006 the big airlines tended to concentrate on taking people to the major cities like Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto. As recently as 2005 there was only one flight a week to Edmonton from the UK. The going rate was about £600 just to get to Canada plus whatever internal flights were required to get to Calgary or Edmonton and then on up to Yellowknife.

This year a number of low cost airlines, such as Flyzoom,  have started competing with the major carriers while the charter airlines  like Canadian Affair, Air Transat and Thomas Cooke have also entered the market for low cost flights to Canada, and all of them are flying to Calgary or Edmonton for as little as £120 each way. Not only is the trans Atlantic cost less, but the internal flights to the trip starting points are also much less expensive. For the internal flights, and to arrange hotels on your way to or from a trip contact, Jim Ingram at jingram8@telusplanet.net.

The down side of these cheap flights is that most of them limit you to 20kg of baggage (30 kg if you fly Premium Class) and they only fly to Edmonton or Calgary one or two days a week, so you need to plan your itinerary with care. However, Nahanni River Adventures supply all your crockery and cutlery, and can hire you tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags and wet suits; all you need bring is your clothing.

The secret is book early. The nearer you get to your departure date the higher the price goes, and, with only a couple of flights a week the seats do get booked up, particularly in July, which is high season and consequently more expensive.
