Twin Otters on Kathawachaga Lake.
Immediately you realize that there are no trees! But this is a good thing, because…
If there is wildlife - you will see it! We schedule our first two Burnside raft trips to coincide with the caribou migration.
If we connect with the migration; and we usually do, you can see upwards of 50,000 caribou in a day!
They are everywhere: swimming in front of your raft, pouring over the hills and wandering through camp!
Muskox are fascinating. These majestic, long-haired creatures seem to be a prehistoric throw-back.
Muskox are a herd animal. When threatened they form a circle with the large bulls on the outside and the others inside.
The tundra is a wildlife viewers paradise.
Birders are rewarded with myriad species.
An arctic tern.
Another beautiful quality of the tundra is that you can hike almost anywhere. We recommend collapsible hiking poles to enhance balance and take some of the burden off your knees.
The Arctic tundra has been given the unfair name of ''barrenlands''. In truth it is anything but barren! In the 'round the clock daylight of summer, the tundra is alive with explosive colour of wild flowers.
Northern species have many adaptations that enable them to thrive in the arctic environment.
Lichens thrive on the tundra.
Delicate features!
A short hike will bring you to the top of the closest promontory. You might as well be on top of Everest because you will see for miles. Bring your binoculars and keep your eyes ''peeled'' because…
you may be lucky enough to spot a wolf den! And…
you can watch for hours…
you may feel like you are getting to know their personality!
A brief hike may bring you to a jewel of a lake where perhaps no one has been for decades - or longer!
The tundra is dotted with thousands of lakes.
Camp on the tundra.
Burnside raft.
Arctic Char and Arctic Grayling are the catch of the day on the Burnside. We encourage catch and release fishing but will keep a small portion to eat if you wish.
Grizzly inhabit the tundra. We follow prudent bear management practices.
The arctic hare is surprisingly large.
Bull caribou.
Burnside camp.
The cycles of nature are readily apparent in the arctic. Discarded antlers provide calcium to rodents who in turn become prey to carnivores.
Eventually we reach Burnside canyon where the river tumbles into Bathurst Inlet of the Arctic Ocean.
Here we hike to Burnside Falls which pour into Bathurst Inlet on the Arctic Ocean.
The Burnside River is truly a ''once in a lifetime'' arctic experience you will never forget!
