Location of Alsek and Tatshenshini Rivers.
Out through the coast range…
...meeting with the Alsek which takes you to the Gulf of Alaska
Some glaciers ''calve'' bergs into the river…
...yielding a surreal riverine environment.
The Tatshenshini joins the Alsek to form a ''wish bone'' shape. We operate a 9 day trip on the upper Alsek only , a 14 day trip on the entire Alsek to the Gulf of Alaska and an 11 day trip on the Tatshenshini, which flows into the lower Alsek, finishing at the Gulf of Alaska. Lets begin on the Upper Alsek, departing on the Dezadeash River, through Alsek Pass…
From each camp you have panoramic views of this pristine wilderness.
The Dezadeash River meets with Kaskawulsh to form the Alsek River.
After two days of floating through spectacular alpine scenery, you enter Lowell Lake. The receding Lowell Glacier left a basin, forming the lake. The glacier now ''calves'' ice bergs which float in the lake water.
Floating among the bergs is a surreal experience.
Behind the face of the glacier you can see the peaks of Mount Kennedy, Alverstone and Hubbard.
Camp on the shores of Lowell Lake.
Misty Alsek morning.
Beautiful alpine flowers abound.
At Lowell Lake we can hike up Goat Herd Mountain for a spectacular view of Lowell Lake and Glacier. Bring plenty of film as the mountain lives up to it's name…

Morning light on Lowell Lake bergs.
Leaving the lake we hit the big rapids for which the river is renowned…
...fortunately, the biggest of the rapids have a trail for those who prefer to walk!
Alsek hiking.
Alsek camping.
Wild Pacific Salmon prepared for dinner.
Camp under the midnight sun!
Exploring the Alsek.
The Tweedsmuir Glacier squeezes the Alsek at Turnback Canyon. Here we employ a helicopter to lift us and our gear around the innavigable canyon.
Slinging our gear beneath the helicopter.
Arguably one of the best flight seeing experiences in the world! On our 9 - day trip we fly back to Haines Junction, finishing our trip. On the 12 - day trip we fly to the base of Turnback Canyon where we resume our expedition. After another day of travel we come to the confluence with the Tatshenshini. Let's now head back upriver to the start of the Tatshenshini trip!
Like the Alsek, the Tatshenshini is the realm of the large, stable expedition rafts.
in short order we are into the upper canyon of the Tat with exciting class III and IV rapids.
All along the way we are watched over the ''eagle eye'' of the prevalent bald eagles.
After the upper canyons the valley broadens and the St. Elias Range dominates the horizon.
The river is fed by fast flowing glacial streams. As the river grows rapidly is size, it courses back and fourth, in braided channels, across the glacial carved valley.
Every camp has a panoramic vista of world class grandeur!
A sow and cub grizzly. The Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers have the highest density of grizzlies denning in the world.
This mother has two cubs.
This is a size 14 human track beside size 14 grizzly!
Sometimes we have the good fortune of spotting wolves.
Hikes into the high country are well rewarded with beautiful, lush, alpine flowers and excellent wildlife viewing.
The views are captivating.
Bring plenty of film!
The maritime influence from the Gulf of Alaska allows for a diverse and abundant selection of wild flowers.
This map shows the confluence of the Tatshenshini and Alsek Rivers. >From this point, the expedition continues on the Alsek River.
The highly glaciated peaks begin to foreshadow the landscape ahead.
Now on the Alsek, dramatic glaciers appear at river level.
Ahead you can see Walker Glacier, a hiking destination.
Camp is at Walker Glacier, ''another world''. In the land of the midnight sun!
Camping at the ''terminal moraine'' of the glacier, you feel like you are in a lunar landscape - but surrounded by beautiful peaks.
We hike onto the toe of the glacier. For many this is a ''once in a lifetime'' experience!
The surface of the glacier reveals crevasses, sink holes, nunataks and seracs.
While captivatingly beautiful, this environment has hazards that your guide will discuss and provide instructions for the proper route.
The ''glacial seracs'' in the back ground are formed as the glacier fractures while flexing over the contours of the mountain beneath.
Exploring the many facets of the glacier.
Departing walker Glacier we float past some of the worlds largest non polar ice sheets.
The Alsek and Grand Plateau Glaciers meet at this point. They have carved out a basin known as Alsek Lake.
These bergs have ''calved'' off the glaciers. Can you spot the three rafts in the for ground? This gives some perspective of size! Remember that only approximately 1/10 of the berg is above water!
Alsek Lake has a mystical feel to it. Many have described the experience of being here as akin to the ''power'' of Virginia Falls on the Nahanni.
The face of the Alsek Glacier. Can you spot the boat in the for ground?
Alsek Lake is an inspiring place. When the time comes to leave, it always seems too soon!
After departing the lake we arrive at the small fish encampment of Dry Bay on the Gulf of Alaska. Here we are met by our charter aircraft for a spectacular flight home with a load of fond memories!
An Exciting river...
...an enchanted land…
...an unforgettable journey.
